Actors during an Assault Prevention Theatre presentation

The idea for Assault Prevention Theatre originated with Sgt. Connie Villela (TCUPD Crime Prevention, retired) in the early part of 1998. Sgt. Villela had been a Rape Crisis counselor for a number of years and came to believe that visual presentation of the issues surrounding sexual assault could make a more dramatic impact on audiences than mere "speaking" presentations were able to effect. Her dream became a reality when the TCU Theatre Department  joined with the police department in forming a "troupe" of student theatre-majors who provide the programs for the APT performances. The presentations are then followed by a group discussion with players remaining "in character" while audience members ask questions or offer comments concerning the events they have witnessed. For more information on APT or for program scheduling, contact officer Pam Christian with the TCUPD Crime Prevention Unit at ext. 7276.
